Data Interoperability Inspired By Open Source
We present a decentralized approach to standards in data annotation. Standards improve communication and enable powerful downstream applications. For example, the UN Global Harmonized System for Classification and Labelling simplifies communication of chemical properties and thereby enables greater power in chemical regulation and modeling. Developing standards is difficult. Particularly in the case of data annotation, where developing standards is so difficult that practitioners frequently create bespoke data structures used for a specific project and never again. We demonstrate how a standards store modeled on open source principles can facilitate cooperation in data annotation and improve the findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability of EHS data.
