Mechanism-based genotoxicity risk assessment

The session will address several new mechanistic approaches for the assessment of genotoxicity including methods based on different biomarkers and next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies. We will learn how mechanistic information is obtained using the approaches discussed today and how the data can be used in risk assessment by contributing to the weight of evidence approach.

Paul Fowler will provide an introduction to genotoxicity testing and the utility of mechanistic testing in the regulatory setting, Jesse Salk of TwinStrand Biosciences will talk about error-corrected NGS technology, i.e., direct quantification of mutagenicity and carcinogenicity. Giel Hendriks will talk about the use of the ToxTracker assay as part of the multistep approach to toxicity testing, and Anouck Thienpont, a PhD student working at  the University of Brussels, will talk about the emerging transcriptomic biomarker technology Genomark.

Dr. Paula Braun has a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the Weizmann Institute of Science and has many years of experience working towards the research, development, and validation of novel in vitro testing methods. She advises the Science Consortium on animal testing and non-animal methods, particularly for genotoxicity testing.
